So you decided you want to go the Walmart beginner full suspension bike option. Ok, awesome!
Your best options today are the Hyper Hydroform Ultra Lightweight or the Mongoose XR-Pro.
You decided to go this route because you either feel that the components that they come with are good enough and you will ride and see what happens, or you are buying these bikes and will upgrade many of the components right away.
If you are looking to upgrade now or maybe in the near future, here are 3 upgrade scenarios for both bikes.
Hyper Hydroform Ultra Lightweight - $199 (walmart.com)
Option 1: Shocks and Derailleur
Total Spent: $460
Option 2: Shocks, wheelset, and 1x9 Drivetrain
Total Spent $685
Option 3: All the above plus hydraulic disc, handlebars, and stem
Total Spent: $799
Well a $200 bike sure got a lot more expensive didn’t it! The advantage though is that you do not have to do all of these upgrades at once.
Now for the Mongoose build options...
Mongoose XR-Pro - $307 (Walmart.com)
Option 1: Shocks, Derailleur, and 1x8 conversion
Total Spent $580
Option 2: Shocks, Derailleur, 1x9 conversion
Total Spent $693
Option 3: Add on hydraulic disc, handlebars, and stem
Total Spent $807
There you have some possible build options for the Hyper and the Mongoose. As you can see I used the same parts on both bikes to try and make it comparable but tried to group them according to what would be the best upgrade at which time.
The Hyper starts out with a $107 price advantage but due to the single wall alloy wheels, the advantage is quickly washed away. In the end both bikes maxed out (at least with these parts) are only $8 apart. The rear freewheel hub on the Hyper and the riveted 3 ring crank prevent it from some simpler upgrades. If you were OK with a 1x8 drivetrain on the XR-Pro, you could have a pretty good beginner ride for only $580. Well there you have some possible options to think about. These were all new parts from various vendors and prices do fluctuate. You may be able to score some sweet deals on some new take-offs on ebay or maybe find some things on clearance, order from China, or get some lightly used parts.
